Step by Step - Painting a Large Wall Mural by Kim Hunter

First rough composition of the mural is done in pencil to get a general idea of the mural content and layout.

Second, a revised pencil sketch composition is created to scale for the intended mural. eg: 1 cm on drawing = 1 ft on wall

Once the composition is
confirmed, a colour draft is created to show the intended colours and tones
to be used on the final wall.
The image seen here is a small watercolour painting brought into Photoshop.
The details are edited and revised for the final colour wall composition.

The wall is then prepared
by gridding the sketch and the wall to scale.
Key elements are roughly painted in the preliminary stages.

This particular wall is
made of painted cinder blocks. The porous surface needed a lot of work to
get a base coat.
The process is painted in stages with the base coat and furthest elements
painted first.

Once the base coat has a
good first base coat, the details are created. This stage is the base for
the final painting.
Once the composition and base colours are created, the final details can
be created using thinner paint.
Thin washes over the detailed painting create atmosphere, depth and lighting.

Contrasts and shadows are
added once the composition of the mural is finished.
Moss, water effects and reflections is added last using a thin wash of lights
and darks.

Changes and revisions are done to the design of the mural once the rough composition is determined. |

The base of the
figures is then created, still working from back to front. The details are added
once the base coat is dry.
To speed this process up, I use a quick drying agent to thin the oil paint in
the final stages of the mural.

![]() ![]() ![]() Wall is cleaned and primed with a fresh coat of exterior latex paint. Blue was used as the background colour of this mural. A doodle is created in collaboration with patrons and the mural they envision. The doodle is then refined to scale and submitted for final approval. This particular mural's scale is one cm on the drawing is equal to one foot on the wall. Each foot is measured and marked with a light pencil and a tab of tape then string sturdy thread verically and horizontally for my grid. (snap lines make a mess) Once the grid is up, I refer to my doodle, only concentrating on each foot square of content. I lighlty sketch with pencil (or paint) the basic composition. The string and tape is then removed and the basic composition details are added. Black exterior latex paint was used to outline the content to create a "colouring book" effect for the students to take part in the painting process. Once each of the classes had an opportunity to contribute to the painting of the mural, I finished the mural with help from some of the more enthusiastic students who contributed throughout the mural painting. |
